My new fixed-gear bike is really coming together. I hope to have it tuned up enough by sunday to do some sweet riding around the hive while Jesse finishes up the paper lanterns recording. I just fit the cog and a BAD-ASS chain.

It still needs a few minor adjustments and finishing touches. Chainline needs some straightening, some Loc-tite on the bracket cups, some handlebar tape and plugs might be nice. I could also use a front brake..

riding the fixed gear in the snow. oh yeah. pretty stable considering i'm running 700x25C tires.

going down some big hills (2nd an nanaimo heading east, slocan and broadway heading south, etc) locking up the cranks and sliding the back wheel from the top of the hill to the bottom. so much fun today.

In the fashion of the foat, I've compiled my own best and worst of 2003. Here goes:

BEST OF:

- Adam W. Taylor aka "Slopes", one of the best friends I've ever had. This guy got me through two years of BCIT with beers and kicking my ass at pool.
- Graduating from BCIT with honours
- Hope to Vanderhoof bike trip (thanks Mark Palm for lending me the panniers)
- Shotgunning Pils outside the STREETS show in Kelowna, passing out in a parking lot
- Finally landing meaningful employment in the engineering field, no more of this courier crap
- THE SKETCHATRON: my first fixed-gear bike. Found this bike in the BCIT parking lot, took it home and fixed it up nice.
- Not living in Burnaby!
- Emmis Hollow, one of my closest friends who I just met at the tail end of 2002.
- Chuck Norris, Fucked Up Kid, Paper Lanterns, Painted Youth, What the Kids Want, This is My fist, Go It Alone, Clarendon Hills, Knulla Roofs, the fuckin' WIFELY DUTIES (fuck yeah), Juls and Kahla collective. Every other stoking band I've seen this year (sorry ground monkey, you did not stoke me out so much)
- Shows at the ALF house
- Midnight bike rides by myself
- Fucking PAPER LANTERNS / PAINTED YOUTH TOUR '03 (getting my Bro-Down on)

WORST OF:

- The amount of liquor I consume on a daily basis
- The amount of Bon's I eat in a week (I'm starting to feel gross)
- Ripped to Shreds broke up? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkk..
- 2nd Ave Fiasco, too many people I love got hurt
- 2nd Ave not being a place where i want to hang out anymore

So it looks like the bad outweighs the good this year, anyway. Hopefully next year is just as stokin.

it stokes me out when i run into people i dont know on the adanac bike route, and they comment on my fixed gear bike.

this is the third time: a train is going by really slow like you have no idea on the tracks by the gelato place. a girl rides up on a single-speed and says "that's a sweet ride. i dont see to many fixed gears around" i say thanks. suddenly the train comes to a complete stop. "should we just hop over it?" "with our bikes? hell why not?" so we jump the train and continue on our merry ways.

people on the bike route are stoking.

So I wake up this morning, a sheet has been pulled from my bed and thrown across the room. My clip leads and other things have been moved from the hook they hang on and scattered about my desk. There's a bottle of Bragg's in my room.

And then I notice: my computer is moved from it's usual perch atop a yellow milk crate and is now sitting on the floor beside the milk crate. I pick it up to put it back and a good 2 cups of water spills out all over me and the floor.

I'm fairly certain that the computer is toast. It's not so much the loss of the computer I am concerned with. It's more the fact that I may lose a job over this. This morning, I got to go through the unpleasant experience of explaining to my potential employer that no, I could not show him the work I had done. Some mysterious person had decided it was a good idea to fill my computer with water and it is no longer working. So he says maybe we can get together tomorrow, but I still wont have anything to show.

The next person who fills my computer with water is a fucking DEAD MAN.

Paper Lanterns / Painted Youth Tour Diary

Tour kicked so much ass!

This is us kicking off the tour in Vancouver. Don't we look stoked?

This is BJ outside the show in Smithers. BJ says "Man, it's nice to be back in my home town!"

Here's AC Cool and the Doctor gettin' down with some footbag after the show in Smithers. That's AC's parents house in the background.

The speedometer broke halfway to Prince George. I thought we were going to get pulled over for speeding, since we didn't know how fast we were going!

This is AC Cool and BJ birdwatching near Jasper on the way to Edmonton. BJ forgot his binoculars. BJ is a birdwatching enthusiast. AC Cool just likes standing on the roof of the van.

This is BJ still birdwatching. AC cool is trying to be a bird. He wants BJ to watch him instead.

This is AC cool looking for the show from the top of the van. We were all stoked to finally be in Edmonton. Danny's not in the picture because he was taking a piss.

AC Cool says "I'm really excited to be in Saskatoon! Look at all those farms!"

The Doctor is doing some jump rope outside the show in Winnipeg. Gotta keep in shape yo!

Here's an action shot of the Doctor. He's a Doctor so he knows that jump rope is good for your cardio-vascular endurance.

We drove AAALLLLLLL night to Kenora from Winnipeg. It was a REALLY long drive. BJ slept all night. This is him waking up. BJ says "Fuuchh Maan. I just woke up."

This is me and the Doctor. I am in awe of the beauty I see in Kenora, Ontario. The Doctor is meditating, standing up.

The Doctor had to take a piss. So did the van apparently. And hell, we figured our gear could use some fresh air. This is on the highway driving from Kenora back to Winnipeg.

All our gear was having such a good time playing in the grass! Everyone had a good time. It was a good day.

Wow! They let me drive coming back across Saskatchewan. I don't have a driver's liscence, but it was easy to drive. What was I going to crash into?

We made it to Calgary just in time for the show. Here's the sillhouette of AC Cool as the sun is going down. We're stoked to be in Calgary.

Here's The Doctor, AC Cool and BJ doing some roof surfing through the Rockies on the way back into BC. It reminded me of that scene in Teen Wolf with Michael J Fox. I told them that Michael J was a professional and it was really dangerous to surf the roof of a moving vehicle, but they wouldn't listen.

Danny was making fun of me for wearing the same clothes every day. Look at that smirk on his face. What an asshole. Tour is hard on friendships sometimes.

This is me. I look glad to be back in Vancouver, finally. Our last show for this tour!

Finally back in Vancouver! We're stoked to be home!!

The it looks like the Beauville caught the Ebola virus on tour. That would explain why it's insides were liquifying.

BJ says "Look what just fell out of the van!"
I say "Put that down BJ! Do you want to catch Ebola?!?!?!"

It was a sad day when the van died of Ebola. But it got us through that tour no problem. At least we all made it home alive. It was a good day. We all had a good time. And afterwards we bobbed for apples and bon's.
